Now you can learn more about the Atchafalaya Basin by finding 24 locations identified in a new state program.

The Atchafalaya Geocache Series is a geocaching scavenger hunt that highlights important historical, natural and man-made features of the Basin tied to the water flow that sustains it. Geocaching is basically a real-world treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices to navigate to specific locations.

Staff of the state Atchafalaya Basin Program identified two dozen locations in and around the Atchafalaya Basin that are integral to its water story, and then placed geocaches at each of these locations, all of which are accessible to the public and can be reached without a boat.

Locations range from near the Old River Control Structure in the north to Morgan City in the south, highlighting such things as access points to the Basin and water control structures, such as floodgates.

The Atchafalaya Basin Program is part of the state Department of Natural Resources. For more information, visit dnr.louisiana.gov/index.cfm?md=pagebuilder&tmp=home&pid=1435.
