Event Information:

Listen and learn from Bryan Piazza about the Atchafalaya River Basin and how it is important to not just the United States, but also the Gulf of Mexico, Atlanta Ocean, and residents of the bayou. With a distance totaling less than 140 miles, this area is unknown to many Americans, but it does play a huge role in water drainage and containment for the Mississippi River. The Atchafalaya draws water from two rivers, the Red and Mississippi. That water is drawn from over 1.2 square miles of river, making it one of the largest drainage basins in the world.

Through years of development and climate change, this protected area is rapidly changing. Through multiple historical, economic, and biological studies, data has been collected to help find a solution to a growing issues popping up in this area about draining, and how to protect the wildlife and the coastal environment. Piazza breaks down the issues and discusses solutions to keep the local and cultural aspects intact, while also spreading resources to the protected areas.
