Parents will be under a bit more pressure next week with their school-age youngsters having a week without that “school” part.

While youngsters celebrate, parents sweat out a schedule to fill out those hours.

If you’re fortunate enough to have time off work — or had the foresight to marry vacation days with the Thanksgiving holiday — then the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Get Out and Fish! community fishing program has given you at least one option.

And it’s sure the youngsters will like it.

LDWF’s fisheries staff has stocked adult catfish in community ponds across the state.

Around here, try the pond at BREC’s Burbank Park on Burbank Drive in Baton Rouge, Girard Park in Lafayette and Zemurray Park in Hammond. If you’re traveling to spend the holiday with family, then you can find the same program at Polk Park in Vidalia, West Monroe’s Kiroli Park.

State fishing rules apply, which means if you’re 16 and older, you need a state basic fishing license to fish these parks, and you can get licenses online from the LDWF website: la.wildlifelicense.com.

Time, travel saver

Commercial fishermen will be able to renew or get new commercial fishing licenses and motorboat registration documents from Wildlife and Fisheries’ satellite offices during the next three weeks.

The LDWF’s Bourg Office at 467 Texas Gulf Road in Bourg will be open from Nov. 28-30 to accommodate commercial fishermen.

The next date is Dec. 5-7 at the LDWF’s New Orleans office located in Suite 210, 2021 Lakeshore Drive on the UNO campus, then Dec. 12-14 at the Lake Charles office at 1213 North Lakeshore Drive.

Office hours will be 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The announcement indicated the LDWF’s Licensing Section will accept payment via personal and cashier's checks, money orders and cash, but no credit cards, and added fishermen should bring license renewal notices.

There is a laundry list of requirements, including residency requirements and federal tax ID numbers.

The LDWF also advised renewals can be handled on its website: wlf.la.gov.

Big recall

Boat and personal watercraft owners should take note of a Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recall of at least 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers equipped with plastic handles.

The CPSC release stated, “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”

The recall affects both plastic-handle and push-button Pindicator Kidde fire extinguishers, including 134, ABC- or BC-rated models manufactured between Jan. 1, 1973-Aug. 15, 2017. These extinguishers are red, white or silver and were sold in the U.S. and Canada.

CPSC’s data showed some 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including one fatality, and about 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns, and more than 90 reports of property damage.

The BoatUS Foundation’s statement urged recreational boat owners “to check their boats for the recalled extinguishers and get a free metal-handled replacement by going to the CPSC recall website” -- cpsc.gov.

You also can call Kidde (855) 271-0773 from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. CST Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. CST Saturday and Sunday, or go to kidde.com, then click on the “Product Safety Recall” window.
