WHO USES ALL THIS GROUNDWATER?

The short answer is: everyone! Water drawn from the Southern Hill Aquifer System is used for drinking, bathing, cooking, cleaning, washing cars, and watering lawns, to name a few types of consumption. Laundromats, restaurants, golf courses, and other businesses use it for similar purposes but on a much larger scale. This "public supply" accounted for a little over 71 million gallons of groundwater everyday in 2014.

Industry also uses groundwater from the Southern Hills Aquifer System for power generation, heating and cooling needs, and the manufacture of all manner of paper goods, petroleum products, and chemicals. Baton Rouge's plentiful, clean, and inexpensive groundwater lured many companies here in the past and continues to be an important asset for economic development in the area today. Industrial use of groundwater accounted for almost 76 million gallons a day in 2014.
