HOW DO WE MANAGE OUR GROUNDWATER FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE?

The Southern Hills Aquifer System is a one of the cleanest, most productive groundwater systems in the nation. However, we do have management challenges related to local overuse and subsequent saltwater intrusion in areas close to the Baton Rouge Fault.

WHAT'S BEING DONE?

The Louisiana Office of Conservation has been working closely with the Capital Area Ground Water Conservation Commission (CAGWCC), which was established by the state Legislature as the front-line manager of local groundwater issues, to implement short- and long-term plans for sustainability based on reductions and relocations of use, alternative sourcing, and the use of cutting edge technology. The Office of Conservation will continue to be an important partner as the CAGWCC moves forward with its management effort based on the most up-to-date scientific information and modeling.

WHAT CAN I DO?

The Southern Hills system is a tremendous asset for everyone here in the region; we all need to pitch in together to maintain its viability for the future. Above all, we want our citizens here in East Baton Rouge Parish to be AWARE of the importance of groundwater in our daily lives and economy. It is our responsibility as the present generation to serve as stewards for this important resource.

Now that you know more about the Southern Hills aquifer system and its challenges, you are in a position to follow the issue and have your voice heard. The Office of Conservation will continue to provide additional information and updates on important management measures that will have a major impact on sustainability. You can follow these updates here, on our "Updates" page.

Most important, we want you to know that the Office of Conservation is committed to the management of this matter in an open and transparent manner based on sound science. With the correct management strategy in place, our groundwater here in Baton Rouge will remain a sustainable natural resource for years to come.
