Atchafalaya Basin Bulletin

Greetings from the Department of Natural Resources Atchafalaya Basin Program

On April 8, 2013, Governor Bobby Jindal formally requested a flow deviation from 30 % to 33 % at the Old River Control Structure to increase water levels in the Atchafalaya Basin for a duration of thirty (30) days to address forecasts that Atchafalaya Basin water levels are anticipated to drop prematurely below 9 feet at the Butte LaRose Gage in April 2013, far below the 1959-2012 average stages. Recognizing that the abnormally low water levels are likely related to the mild winter, with reduced runoff in the Mississippi River Watershed, the predicted low water levels would have significant ecological impacts on the Atchafalaya Basin as well as economic impacts on the State of Louisiana and therefore the request for a diversion was determined to be appropriate.

In response to Governor Jindal's request, on April 10, 2013 the Mississippi River Valley Division of the Corps of Engineers has approved the implementation of this plan for fifteen (15) days, which began on April 10, 2013. Conditions will be reevaluated by the Corps after fifteen (15) days to determine if the deviation will continue for another fifteen (15) days as requested by the State of Louisiana
