The Geological Oil and Gas Division administers a regulatory program to prevent waste of oil and gas, to conserve the natural resources of the State, to prevent the drilling of unnecessary wells and to protect the correlative rights of mineral owners through the application of State laws, rules, regulations, and policies of the Office of Conservation. These tasks are accomplished by managing a comprehensive program that includes accepted petroleum geological practices in conjunction with accepted petroleum engineering practices administered by the Engineering Divisions of the Office of Conservation. The Division encompasses the following sections:

Western Louisiana Oil and Gas Fields and Orders Management Section

The Western Louisiana Oil and Gas Fields and Orders Management Section is responsible for the geological regulatory oversight of matters in the western part of Louisiana, including the adjacent offshore areas. (see map)

This oversight includes the Oil and Gas Hearing and Unitization matters in that area with respect to the review of geological and related issues critical to the Division’s mandates and mission. This Section also is responsible for the review, preparation and management of the Commissioner of Conservation’s Orders, including the completion of Critical Date Orders after the completion of the geological review,  issued in conjunction with the Oil and Gas Hearings and other Commissioner’s directives as well as the management of the Digital Mapping/GIS Unit which provides oil and gas data mapping,  archival map imaging and related support functions including the State Exhibit A order plats.

Eastern Louisiana Oil and Gas Fields and Programmatic Support Section

The Eastern Louisiana Oil and Gas Fields and Programmatic Support Section is responsible for the geological oversight of matters in the eastern part of Louisiana, including the adjacent offshore areas. (see map)

This oversight includes the Oil and Gas Hearing and Unitization matters in that area with respect to the review of geological and related issues critical to the Division’s mandates and mission.  In addition to those responsibilities, this section also manages the Solicitation of Views requests, the Critical Date Order Geological Review, the Waiver of Production Test requests, special and highly technical and controversial matters including State Exhibit A mapping and unit configuration as well as the Log Files Unit which provides well log imaging, well log electronic submission and quality control and support to the Division, the Office of Conservation, and to the industry and public as well.
