Clean Cities

Clean Cities is a voluntary U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program to encourage the use of alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels, reduce the nation's dependence on foreign petroleum, and improve the local air quality.

The Clean Cities Program is between the State Energy Office, local government, fleets, and other agencies and is working to promote and encourage the compliance with the Energy Policy Act (EPACT).

The overall goal of the program is to facilitate the achievement of primary objectives established by EPACT and the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). More specifically, the program is intended to:

·        Facilitate alternative fuel vehicle production & conversion

·        Expand refueling infrastructures

·        Support regulated fleets

·        Create new jobs and commercial opportunities

·        Advance clean air objectives

·        Increase public awareness

·        Provide greater fuel choices

·        Develop "Clean Corridors"

·        Comply with legislation/regulations

Louisiana has two US Dept. of Energy-designated Clean Cities Coalitions.  The Southeast Louisiana Clean Fuel Partnership covers the parishes represented by the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, while Louisiana Clean Fuels is expanding and covers the remainder of the state.

Clean Cities advances the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum consumption in transportation. A national network of nearly 100 Clean Cities coalitions brings together stakeholders in the public and private sectors to deploy alternative and renewable fuels, idle-reduction measures, fuel economy improvements, and emerging transportation technologies.
