Alternative Transportation and Transportation Efficiency
The Department of Energy and Natural Resources is committed to reducing energy consumption in transportation and promoting the use of alternative fuels. According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics, motorists in Louisiana traveled 46,513 Million highway miles in 2011. The Energy Information Administration estimates that 723 Trillion Btu of energy were consumed in the transportation sector in that same year. Gasoline and diesel accounted for 38% and 27% of that total, respectively.
