Local Coastal Management Programs

Local Coastal Management Programs (LCMP) give the opportunity for a local coastal parish to be the permitting authority for coastal uses of local concern defined as "those uses which directly and significantly affect coastal waters and are in need of coastal management but are not uses of state concern and which should be regulated primarily at the local level if the local government has an approved program" (RS. 49:214.25.A.2). To become an official LCMP the parish must complete a process and obtain federal and state approval. Once approved, the Office of Coastal Management of the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources provides technical assistance and guidance to the parish program.  To date there are twelve coastal parishes with approved programs: Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson, Lafourche,  Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany and Terrebonne have approved, active LCMP.
