2011 Atchafalaya Basin Sweep: Over 200 volunteers from the Evangeline Area Council of the Boys Scouts and their families from across the Acadiana area descended upon the Atchafalaya Welcome Center in Butte LaRose and at several boat ramp locations throughout the Atchafalaya Basin to remove litter and trash on Saturday, November 5th during the 2nd Annual Basin Sweep. The Basin Sweep Event was organized by the Evangeline Area Council of the Boys Scouts and completed in partnership with local governments, several state agencies, and the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR). An estimated 44,000 pounds of trash was collected and removed from the environment through everyone's efforts on this day - contributing to a combined total of approximately 89,000 pounds collected throughout the two "sweep" events that have been held to date.
