EVENT: Cooperative Coastal Restoration Project Groundbreaking
WHEN: Tuesday, April 19, 2005 – 10 a.m.
WHERE: Pointe-Aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area
*Terrebonne Parish, 15 miles southeast of Houma, off La. 665
(Directions: Take La. 55 south from Houma to La. 665 and drive south to groundbreaking site on Parish Road 73/Island Road)

 

BACKGROUND: This $1.7 million cooperative coastal restoration project will restore approximately 4,700 acres of brackish-intermediate marsh within the Pointe Aux Chenes WMA managed by the Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries (DWF). The goal is conservation and enhancement of the marsh area and aquatic vegetation for the benefit of wildlife species in the area.

Major funding for the project was provided by Ducks Unlimited (DU), the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR), and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). The project construction contract was awarded to T. Baker Smith & Son, Inc. (Houma).

Project information will be provided by: Sen. Reggie Dupre (Dist. 20), DNR Secretary Scott Angelle, DWF Assistant Secretary Parke Moore, and DU’s officials Mike Benge and Jeff DeBlieux.

**Airboat tours of the project area will be provided for news media following the groundbreaking.
