DNR COASTAL MANAGERS HOLD WORKSHOP AND ANNOUNCE PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON NONPOINT SOURCE POLLUTION TOPIC
Thursday, November 30, 2000 Louisiana State University, Efferson Hall, Baton Rouge, LA
Louisiana Department of Natural Resources' Coastal Management Division will host a workshop to address and discuss the topic,Nonpoint Source Pollution, a serious problem for coastal waters and other water bodies in the state. The workshop will be held on Thursday, November 30th at Efferson Hall on the LSU campus.
Nonpoint Source Pollution is caused by rainfall moving over the landscape, picking up man-made and natural pollutants, such as oil, grease, excess fertilizer, herbicides and sewage. These pollutants go untreated and are eventually deposited into our rivers, bayous, lakes, and coastal waters.
The workshop will assist the Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO), various state agencies, coastal parishes, and local planning commissions in strategies for community outreach and public involvement.
DNR coastal officials will also present an educational video called Rainwater Blues. The video will be used in an upcoming public awareness campaign aimed at citizen participation in the prevention of this type of pollution.
