DNR COASTAL OFFICIALS TO HOST SYMPOSIUM ON PROTECTING COASTAL WATERS

Monday, April 3, 2000

Coastal zone parish officials will join state coastal management officials for a two-day symposium, Local Coastal Programs 2000: Protecting Coastal Waters, to be held at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Lafayette on April 5th and 6th.

Sponsored by the state Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Interagency Affairs Program, the symposium will focus on nonpoint source pollution issues. Program Manager Greg DuCote said the meetings will offer Local Coastal Program (LCP) administrators as well as community leaders information on how to obtain and best utilize federal grants for nonpoint source pollution projects in their areas. Presenters will share information on their experiences and on effective measures that help protect coastal waters. DuCote said local coastal program officials continue to have expanded roles as coastal stewards.

Guest speaker will be Josh Lott of NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management in Silver Spring, Maryland. Other presenters are Brad Spicer, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry's Assistant Commissioner of Soil and Water Conservation and Barbara Romanowsky, an administrator with the state Department of Environmental Quality. Industry representatives and parish and state water quality specialists will also participate.

DuCote said the meetings encourage parish interaction on issues, problems, and best practices in protecting our coastal resources.
