DNR: Despite Rain, Ground Water Conservation Efforts Must Continue
BATON ROUGE – Today, the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources issued the following statements in response to this week’s rainfall in Caddo Parish:
DNR Secretary Scott Angelle said “Although our prayers for rain were answered less than a week after the Office of Conservation declared a ground water emergency in southern Caddo parish, the residents of Keithville and the Ellerbe Road area of Shreveport must continue to be diligent in water conservation efforts. All of northwest Louisiana, which has been impacted by a drought of over 15 months, will need continued cooperation from its residents in order to ensure that the affected aquifers are healthy for current and future generations.”
Commissioner of Conservation Jim Welsh said, “While the recent rain surely brings some hope to the people of the area, I am certain that we must continue to work together using the prescribed measures in the emergency order so that we can begin to see some positive changes in these two aquifers. The drought has been persistent for months, and it will take more than a matter of days for a turn-around to happen.”
