DNR Secretary Angelle Congratulates FLAG for Receiving EPA's Gulf Guardian Award

Thursday, June 9, 2011

BATON ROUGE – Today, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle congratulated the Future Leaders of America's Gulf (FLAG) for receiving a 2011 Gulf Guardian Award in the Youth Education Category from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Gulf of Mexico Program.

“I was honored to meet the leaders of FLAG last year at the Rally for Economic Survival, and then continued to support their efforts and the growth of their organization.  Their initiative, leadership and drive was incredibly impressive, and I was certain that this group of students would make a lasting mark on Louisiana and the Gulf Coast,” said Angelle.  “When it comes to feeding and fueling our nation, there is no more important piece of real estate in America than the Gulf Coast.  These young leaders understand that, and I congratulate them for earning the Gulf Guardian Award.”

FLAG is a non-profit organization formed by high school students focused on educating and informing youth on the plight of the Gulf Coast region.  The organization was formed shortly after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and is increasingly active today.  Louisiana area high school students continually join the effort to become civically involved and learn about the Gulf region.  The mission of FLAG is to give the youth of the Gulf Coast a voice to express their thoughts and opinions on the decisions being made today that will affect their future tomorrow.

The Gulf Guardian Awards recognize and honor the businesses, community groups, individuals and agencies that are taking positive steps to keep the Gulf health, beautiful and productive.

The Awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Meeting on August 3, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ballroom at the Westin New Orleans Canal Place in New Orleans.
