Enjoy This Earth Day, April 13th, in Baton Rouge DNR displays offer something for all
It was on April 22, 1970 that Earth Day was born. Earth Day 1970 led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In 1990, Earth Day went global. In 2000, Earth Day had the Internet to help link activists and environmental groups around the world. Additionally, the Earth Day Network, based in Seattle, Washington, USA, is the international organization that coordinates Earth Day events worldwide.
Today, in our own backyard, Louisiana citizens are flocking to parks, downtown areas, schools and other places where a healthy and sustainable environment is on top of their priority list.
Earth Day activities have already begun in Louisiana towns and cities but the main Baton Rouge Earth Day event takes place this Sunday, April 13th from noon to 8:30 p.m. downtown on North Boulevard. All events, entertainment, and exhibits are free and open to the public.
The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is a proud participant in Earth Day celebrations. This year, the DNR will feature three exhibits and will have a variety of educational and promotional materials to handout during the festivities.
DNR Coastal Management Education Coordinator Steve Chustz will exhibit under the “Wetlands Tent” providing information on the new “America’s Wetlands: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana”.
DNR Coastal Restoration Project Manager Kenneth Bahlinger plans a display on coastal restoration projects and work of the department along with activities for children.
DNR Office of Conservation will have a brand new exhibit featuring information from the Groundwater Management Commission. Conservation Manager Tony Duplechin will have a tabletop display with brochures, several giveaway items, and tips on conserving water in the home.
The broad Earth Day message is that our planet is precious, perishable and belongs to all of us. This year, the BR downtown theme will be “Preserve Our Wild”. DNR encourages everyone to support this effort. More information can be found at http://www.ci.baton-rouge.la.us/Dept/DDD/03eday.htm
