Estuarians in parade for Mardi Gras

Tuesday, February 1, 2005

The America’s WETLAND action heroes, The Estuarians, will appear as the “Krewe of Estys” at eight Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans this month. The Estys will be throwing prized bracelets like those presented at Mardi Gras festivities in Washington, DC last week.

The bracelets, white rubber wrist bands embossed with the slogan "Save America's WETLAND," will be widely disseminated to raise awareness of Louisiana's coastal land loss and the serious impact such loss can have on the state and nation. Small rubber-type wrist bracelets have become a symbol used by people of all ages to support important causes throughout the world.

Currently, Louisiana's wetlands are disappearing at a rate equivalent to one football field every 38 minutes. It is estimated in this century alone, if the rate of loss continues, a land mass greater than the size of Delaware and the Washington, DC-Baltimore metro area combined will be lost. The America's WETLAND effort began in 2002, to raise support for the protection of a unique and valuable environmental and ecological area.

New Orleans area parades featuring the Estuarians include:
2/2/05 – Muses
2/5/05 – Endymion
2/6/05 – Bacchus
2/7/05 – Orpheus
2/8/05 – Zulu & Rex
