HERO Program at DNR Wins Again

Thursday, October 16, 2003
HERO manager Buddy Justice explains the significance of energy efficient homes at the recent dedication of the first Energy Start neighborhood in Louisiana.

The state Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Home Energy Rebate Option (HERO) program is once again a top winner of the Energy Star Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. The HERO program has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to environmental protection and energy efficiency by qualifying 2,268 Energy Star homes during 2003.

In 2002, the department’s HERO staff certified over 1,000 homes. Also this year, in the Hammond area, an entire residential development was launched and dedicated on October 2, where some 80 homes will be constructed under Energy Star guidelines. Another “first” for the state of Louisiana, this new Energy Star Neighborhood is expected to have close to 30 homes completed by mid-2004.
