Holly Beach Project Topic of Community Meeting May 22
Proposed coastal restoration work for Holly Beach in Cameron parish will be discussed at a public meeting on Tuesday, May 22 at 1 p.m. at the Cameron Parish Policy Jury office. Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) coastal officials will facilitate the meeting, reviewing proposed and future plans.
Both Senator Gerald Theunissen and Representative Dan Flavin have actively participated in the project plans and are encouraging community awareness and support in the state's efforts to restore and revitalize the Holly Beach coastal area.
A stone breakwater project completed by DNR about seven years ago, stretches over eight miles just south of Highway 82 and west of Holly Beach. Recommendations for a beach nourishment plan, along with enhancements to the existing breakwaters are now being considered. "Funding for these projects have not been determined but cost and funding solutions will also be discussed," noted DNR Coastal Restoration and Management Assistant Secretary Randy Hanchey.
Hanchey said that an internationally known coastal engineering firm has analyzed the project site and is offering recommendations that include providing 1,750,000 cubic yards of sand to the beach from offshore to help rebuild this eroding area of the coast.
