HOLLY BEACH WORK IN FULL SWING

Sand pumping and rebuilding moves into 10th day in Cameron Parish

Tuesday, September 17, 2002

CAMERON, LA—
WHAT: Media Field Day at the Holly Beach /Constance Beach Shoreline Restoration Project in Cameron, Louisiana

On 9-19-02, with 10 days of work in progress, contractors have much to show for their coastal restoration efforts. Using a Dustpan Dredge Beachbuilder, both man and machine have been pumping sand material along the beach to combat shoreline erosion. Within the breakwater field where work began, 1.75 million cubic yards of sand continues to be lifted and placed along 5.3 miles of submerged discharge pipeline. The area of work is located between the dredge beachbuilding equipment and the shoreline. In approximately 58 days, pumping is expected to be completed. In just a few months, some 31,000 acres of marsh habitat will be protected. Hwy 82, a hurricane evacuation route, will also be protected. Anticipated completion for this federal/state (CWPPRA or Breaux Act) project is late November 2002.

WHEN: Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 10 a.m. to noon
