Neotropical Songbird Tour in the Atchafalaya Basin, May 15th

Wednesday, May 12, 2004

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ Atchafalaya Basin Program (ABP) Non-Game Bird Committee will host a birding tour on Saturday, May 15, 2004 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The self-paced outing will begin at the Intersection of I-10 and LA Highway 975.

“I believe this opportunity will amaze and delight those participating, since they could see many beautiful bird species along this dense area of vegetation, “ said Dr. Jay Huner, member of the ABP Non Game Birds Committee. “Birders might possibly spot the large Swallow-tailed Kites as well as warblers and the Yellow-billed Cuckoos, White-eyed Vireos, Northern Cardinals, and Painted Buntings,” he said.

The tour will include four chosen areas to observe the songbirds. A facilitator at each site will assist with identifying the birds by their unique song. The four selected areas are Bayou DesOurses, Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge, Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, and the Krotz Springs Bridge.

At the intersection of I-10 and LA Highway 975 there will be a sign to notify individuals joining the tour where to stop and gather the birding information.
