New Walking Trail in Henderson, groundbreaking held Jan. 17

State and local officials and community leaders turn some dirt to mark the start of a new walking trail in the town of Henderson.

State officials from the departments of Natural Resources (DNR) and Transportation and Development (DOTD) along with St. Martin Parish officials will gather for the ground breaking ceremony of a new walking trail on Tuesday, Jan.17th, at the Henderson Recreation Hall at 9 a.m. in Henderson, LA.

            The trail will be constructed as part of Henderson Park’s Master Plan and includes one-fifth of a mile long and eight feet wide asphalt foundation. This project will also consist of improvements to park pavilions. The newer pavilions will be constructed of galvanized steel and sheet metal and have fans, enhanced lighting and electricity.

            The following phase of the project will include development of the adjacent 100 acres for RV camping, primitive camping and will include restrooms. In the second phase, the walking path will be extended into the woods allowing visitors a more scenic view of wildlife and a meditation area.

            The state Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Community Programs will provide $100,000 of the funding along with $10,000 each from the DNR Atchafalaya Basin Program and St. Martin Parish.

            DNR Secretary Scott Angelle and Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette will host the ceremony. State Senator Craig Romero, and Representative Sydnie Mae Durand are scheduled to attend, as well as St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier. The public is invited to attend.
