The La. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is responsible for assuring that all water wells in the state are properly constructed and are registered. DNR’s Office of Conservation requires a 60-day prior notification for the construction of all water wells, with the exception of oil and gas rig supply, drought relief, replacement, and domestic wells. 

DNR requires a licensed water well driller to perform water well installations – Water Well Drillers listing.

Citizens of the state should know that “water well testing” and the Safe Drinking Water Program are services of the La. Department of Health Office of Public Health. Through this agency, Louisianans have easy access to test privately owned water wells for biological contaminants.

Citizens can conveniently order testing kits using any major credit card 24 hours per day, seven days per week and have them shipped to their home.

The Office of Public Health states that nearly one out of every eight people in Louisiana get their drinking water from privately owned domestic water wells. The cost for testing can range from $40.00 to $100.00.
