Public meetings— details on La. coastal restoration plans Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, New Orleans

Friday, May 23, 2003

NEW ORLEANS - A milestone has been reached by the multi-agency team studying how to restore Louisiana's coastal ecosystem.

"The Louisiana Coastal Area (LCA) study has determined the costs and benefits for each of the 32 localized project alternatives that will be brought together in a coast wide restoration plan," said Troy Constance, the study's project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Members of the federal-state agency team, and other coastal engineers and scientists, will present details of the study to the public at four locations across south Louisiana beginning next week. Officials with the LCA expect the results to lead to implementation of a $14 billion construction plan to restore coastal Louisiana.

State Department of Natural Resources' project manager Jon Porthouse joins Corps officials in encouraging public participation and discussion on the calculated effects of the subprovince alternatives approach and the process being developed to select a coast wide restoration plan.
