ROCKS AND EARTH STUFF: GEOLOGICAL SURVEY REACHES CLASSROOM

Friday, September 13, 1996

The Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS), under the state Department of Natural Resources, is currently producing a series of earth science educational brochures called EARTH STUFF. The brochures are for use by K 9 teachers to supplement classroom lesson plans.

"LGS is committed to education and assisting Louisiana schools, teachers, and students through the development and dissemination of all types of geological materials," LGS's state geologist Bill Marsalis said. By the end of the year, the second brochure of the series will be ready for instructors and students to utilize in their classes.

The first in the series of brochures is known as Minerals And Rocks: A Primer by Bradford C. Hanson. It includes student activities and information on rocks and minerals indicative to Louisiana, as well as a sample rock and mineral set. This booklet is designed with materials and information for three grade groups; K 2, 3 6, and 7 9 with grade-appropriate instructions. Minerals And Rocks is now in circulation and can be requested by interested teachers throughout the state. The other brochures will cover topics pertaining to: water, biology, fossils, environment and conservation, all emphasizing Louisiana's history and geology. All the materials may be reproduced and listed projects do not require any special equipment.

EARTH STUFF brochures can be ordered from the publications sales office of the Louisiana Geological Survey at (504) 388-8590. There is no charge at this time for copies of the EARTH STUFF series.

Teachers from across the state are encouraged to provide LGS with ideas, comments and suggestions for future publications and resource materials. LGS is the Earth Science Center of Louisiana and is presently located at Louisiana State University, P.O. Box G, Baton Rouge. LGS will soon move to the State Land and Natural Resources building (625 North 4th Street) to be stationed within DNR's Office of Mineral Resources.
