Update: DNR Coastal Management Seeking Land Conservation Proposals

Projects May Be Eligible for Up to $3 Million in Federal Funding

Monday, February 7, 2011

BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Office of Coastal Management is seeking coastal land conservation projects that may be eligible for up to $3 million in federal government funding per proposal.

This is a type of land acquisition program sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and known as Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) aimed at protecting ecologically-valued and historical lands. CELCP has been in existence since 2002, helping to manage and protect important coastal and estuarine areas, keeping these areas out of development.

This program provides state and local governments with matching funds to purchase significant coastal and estuarine lands, or conservation easements on such lands, from willing sellers. Lands or conservation easements acquired with CELCP funds are protected in perpetuity so that they may be enjoyed by future generations,” explained DNR Secretary Scott Angelle.

DNR’s Office of Coastal Management encourages all potential applicants to contact them to submit proposal ideas/projects by its deadline of March 15, 2011.  DNR must submit project proposals to NOAA by April 15, 2011.

“Our staff is ready to help provide assistance and guidance in preparing proposals,” OCM Assistant Secretary Lou Buatt noted.

NOAA’s CELCP is a competitive national funding program for states with coastal management programs.

DNR will hold a workshop for potential proposers on Thursday, February 10th, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm in Baton Rouge at the LaSalle Building on the 1st Floor in the Griffon Room, 617 North Third Street Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802.

DNR’s Office of Coastal Management contact is Gregory DuCote, Gregory.DuCote@la.gov, 225-342-5052
