Water Video Says Conserve

DNR encourages youth to take lead in conserving

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

The state Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Conservation announced today the launch of a new educational video aimed at increasing awareness of the need for water conservation in our state. The video also stresses environmental stewardship by our youth.

Produced in DVD format and entitled “Our Lives…Our Water”, the film is intended for use in the classroom (upper elementary and middle schools) airing about 10 minutes in length and featuring a cast of actors from north Louisiana.

Commissioner of Conservation James Welsh said the video is also meant to reach the state’s adult population with a message about the requirement to report new water well installation to the Office of Conservation.

“Everyone in Louisiana should be educated on where water comes from, how we use it, and why water resources and aquifers are so important. To protect our supply, we should conserve. Individuals, families, companies and communities, all have a part to play in water usage and conservation,” Welsh said.

As a new school year starts, the Conservation office plans to begin distribution of the video, free of charge, to schools statewide through the Louisiana Resources Center for Educators, www.lrce.org  (LRCE), to Superintendents of Schools, public libraries, and interested community and civic organizations.

The film project was created in collaboration with DNR, Trailblazer RD&D, and the Sparta Groundwater Conservation District Commission. Newcomer-Young Productions, Inc. of Monroe produced the film staring Rayville, La. native Henry Cumpton, a former educator known for his portrayal of the legendary Mark Twain.

Following dissemination of copies of Our Lives…Our Water, DNR and the Office of Conservation plan to present the video on its website at www.dnr.louisiana.gov
