HOLLY BEACH WORK IN FULL SWING
WHAT: Media Field Day at the Holly Beach /Constance Beach Shoreline Restoration Project in Cameron, Louisiana
Mississippi River’s 1st large sediment diversion project will begin next year

Construction will begin in spring 2003 on the West Bay Sediment Diversion Project, a first-of-its-kind wetlands restoration in coastal Louisiana featuring uncontrolled sediment diversion from the Mississippi River.

Governor Announces World, National & State Partners for America’s Wetland: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana
Governor M. J. “Mike” Foster, Jr., today announced that prominent world, national and state industry and organization leaders will join in Louisiana’s multi-year initiative to increase national awareness of the state’s dramatic coastal land loss and how that loss impacts the nation and the world.
August Lease Sale Reported by State Mineral Board
The State Mineral Board conducted a Lease Sale August 14, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Conservation & Mineral Resources Hearing Room located in the LaSalle Office Building in Baton Rouge. Below are the preliminary results of the Lease Sale and 2002-2003 Fiscal Year totals.
DNR SUPPORTS CONSERVATION FUND IN LAUNCHING NATURAL RESOURCES LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
Louisiana Department of Natural Resources' officials joined forces with other agencies charged with conservation, resource management and outdoor recreation to form a bi-partisan organization aimed at building partnerships between the states and the federal government to enhance the management and conservation of America's natural resources. Until now, there has not been a formal organization to take a comprehensive view of natural resource protection. This unique organization, called the Natural Resources Leadership Council of the States (NRLCS), recently received its approval from the National Governors Association to formally organize.
Conservation Office to Hold Seminar on Hazardous Liquids in Baton Rouge
Louisiana hazardous liquids operators and contractors will have the opportunity to attend a two-day training seminar to be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge on Aug. 6th and 7th.
DNR officials join in Energy and National Rebuild America Conference
On Monday, July 29th, officials of the state Department of Natural Resources' Technology Assessment Division and Energy Section will participate in the 2002 State Energy Program/Rebuild America National Conference in New Orleans.

Welsh Becomes State Commissioner of Conservation

James H. Welsh has been named the new Commissioner of Conservation at the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) starting July 1st. Welsh, who retired from state service with 36 years in the Office of Conservation, was selected by Governor Mike Foster to assume the top job.
