The state’s Office of Conservation has issued a final order today declaring portions of the Sparta Aquifer in north Louisiana to be critical ground water areas. The Commissioner of Conservation has made certain determinations and has spelled out the conditions to be followed as required by state law. Commissioner of Conservation James Welsh said the order does not mandate any current restrictions on new or existing water wells.

Senator Donald Hines, Representative Monica Walker, and government officials recently signed a cooperative agreement to spend $158,500 for beautification and other projects associated with the Avoyelles Master Plan. The legislators from Bunkie and Marksville respectively, joined Department of Natural Resources officials and Avoyelles Parish President Kirby Roy at the Capitol to move the plan forward.

Baton Rouge, LA – Jack Caldwell, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, today focused attention on Louisiana’s coastal land loss at the Inaugural National Conference on Coastal and Estuarine Habitat Restoration – Saving Our Coastal Heritage. Secretary Caldwell, along with other nationally recognized leaders in the field of coastal habitat restoration, presented the information at a plenary session, entitled “Leadership Visions in Habitat Restoration.”

Caldwell is an appointee of Governor Mike Foster, serving as head of the state Department of Natural Resources.
