Letter to the Editor: Gov. Blanco reiterates state’s position on LNG
I am writing in response to your recent editorial criticizing the decision of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources to issue a consistency determination for ExxonMobil’s Pearl Crossing Liquefied Natural Gas terminal proposed to be located more than 35 miles off Louisiana’s coast. This decision was based on factors outlined in Louisiana’s coastal zone management program. The Department of Natural Resources concluded that the Pearl Crossing LNG project was generally consistent with state management plans, but that concerns remained about the impacts to marine life of the open-loop system proposed to be used by the terminal.
Clean Marina Program Has First Graduates
The Louisiana Clean Marina program is new, is voluntary, and will soon bestow recognition on two marinas in the state that have passed the test. According to Project Manager Greg DuCote of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Coastal Management division, these are the very first of many more marina owners and operators that will put best management practices in place to achieve this status.

DNR showcases successful Geographic Information System

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) implemented the Strategic Online Natural Resources Information System (SONRIS) in 1999 to provide petroleum exploration/ production and coastal restoration/management data to its staff, industry and the public via the Internet. SONRIS consists of Oracle databases, electronic document image access, and custom online interactive map production via a geographic information system (GIS).
Sparta Aquifer Determination Issued by Conservation Office
The state’s Office of Conservation has issued a final order today declaring portions of the Sparta Aquifer in north Louisiana to be critical ground water areas. The Commissioner of Conservation has made certain determinations and has spelled out the conditions to be followed as required by state law. Commissioner of Conservation James Welsh said the order does not mandate any current restrictions on new or existing water wells.
Coastal Restoration Project Celebrates Earth Day and Audubon Centennial
(Abbeville, La. 4/22/05) On Friday, representatives of the National Audubon Society, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL), Restore America's Estuaries (RAE) and Vermilion Parish joined with members of the public at the Vermilion Parish Library in Abbeville to celebrate completion of a 640 acre coastal restoration project located in the Paul J. Rainey Audubon Sanctuary.
