NOAA BIOLOGISTS INSTALL UNIQUE PILOT PROJECT ON LOUISIANA'S CHANDELEUR ISLANDS

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources recently installed a first-of-a-kind habitat restoration test project on Louisiana's Chandeleur Islands. The project, which included the installation of 1,500 smooth cordgrass plants (Spartina alterniflora), is unique because it will provide specific information on the most effective way to restore the islands and, ultimately, protect important wetlands. "This is the kind of innovative work we need to protect Louisiana's coastal wetlands," said Penny Dalton, the director of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service.

Lafourche CZM Office Now Has Permit Information Center

DNR SMALL DREDGE PROJECT TO BENEFIT AREAS IN JEFFERSON PARISH

Construction work has recently started to create beneficial marshland at three sites in Jefferson Parish along Bayou Dupont. Department of Natural Resources’s (DNR) Coastal Restoration officials said the job was awarded to Grillot Land & Marine, LLC of Belle Chase and should be completed in eight months.

The Riverside Centroplex was the site today for activities designating the City of Baton Rouge (Greater Baton Rouge Area) a "Clean City" under a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Mayor-President Tom Ed McHugh joined forces with state and federal officials, and business and community leaders in a campaign for clean air and the use of alternative transportation fuels in Baton Rouge and five surrounding parishes.

Sandra Bailey, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Mineral Resources at the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, has recently traveled to Caracus, Venezuela to meet with oil ministers on the topic of the state's mineral leasing program. In March of this year, she met with Venezuela's Minister of Energy and Mines Ali Rodriquez, and Director of Hydrocarbons Bernardo Alvarez.
