The first in a series of Earth and Environment Days will be held on Friday, September 26 at John L. Ory Elementary School in LaPlace. State Representative Robert "Bobby" Faucheux has planned the activity to take place in a number of elementary schools throughout his legislative district (District 57) during the fall months of this year. Representative Faucheux's staff has worked with area school principals in coordinating this extracurricular educational activity.

The featured event to be held on Saturday, September 20th, the great Louisiana Beach Sweep, kicks-off the annual celebration supported by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), local zone coordinators, volunteers, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

COASTAL PROGRAM ACCELERATES WITH LAND AGREEMENT APPROVAL

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Assistant Secretary Katherine Vaughan's most recent accomplishment has been attaining approval from the House and Senate Natural Resources committees of the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company's (LL&E) agreement to donate land to the state for a number of planned restoration projects. She said the approval marks the way for the state's coastal program to begin a $5.5 million reclamation project that will benefit 2,500 acres of marsh.

LOUISIANA WETLANDS UPDATE HEARD BY WHITE HOUSE STAFF

The state's coastal restoration and management leaders recently met with a White House working group to discuss past, present, and future coastal restoration efforts in Louisiana. The Breaux Act Task Force chairman Colonel William Conner of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers led the discussion as other federal agency representatives also participated.

STATE TO CARRY OUT NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDING ENERGY CODE

Governor M. J. "Mike" Foster Jr. and state and federal officials gathered Tuesday for a ceremonial signing of Louisiana's new commercial building energy conservation code. A blue- ribbon panel of citizens and public officials that helped develop the energy code legislation also participated in the event. The state Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Energy section assisted in drafting the new law which was passed in this recent legislative session.

GOVERNOR FOSTER CALLS FOR REASSESSMENT OF OFFSHORE IMPACT STUDY

In a recent letter to Mineral Management Service's (MMS) regional director, Governor M. J. "Mike" Foster, Jr. has asked the federal government to reevaluate the impact of the proposed sale of offshore leases (169, 172, 175, 178, 182) and its significance to the Louisiana Gulf Coast region. The U.S. Department of Interior's MMS manages the nation's natural gas, oil and other mineral resources on the OCS, and collects, accounts for, and disburses revenues from federal offshore leases.

Shoreline Protection Project Underway in St. Charles

A demonstration project aimed at shoreline protection in St. Charles parish is now underway announced Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) coastal officials today. Phase I of construction of the Lake Salvadore Shoreline Protection demonstration project has begun on the north shore of Lake Salvador adjacent to the Lake Salvador Wildlife Management Area, said DNR project manager Kenneth Bahlinger. The project will test four types of innovative shoreline protection structures, Bahlinger reported.
