NOVEMBER LEASE SALE CONDUCTED BY MINERAL BOARD
The State Mineral Board conducted a Lease Sale on November 12, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. in the Mineral Board Hearing Room located in the State Land and Natural Resources Building in Baton Rouge. Below are the preliminary results of the Lease Sale and 1997-98 Fiscal Year totals.
EFFICIENCY DRIVEN TECHNOLOGY— DNR MOVING AHEAD
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has recently awarded Methods Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTS) of Baton Rouge a contract to replace its existing legacy computer system with an enterprise-wide Oracle-based integrated business application system. The new technology will allow the agency to perform daily operations more efficiently and timely as well as enable the Offices of Conservation, Mineral Resources, and Coastal Restoration and Management to more effectively serve the public.
CAERNARVON PROJECT GIVEN AN "A" BY COASTAL SPECIALISTS
After five years in operations, coastal specialists who have routinely examined and monitored the Caernarvon freshwater diversion project are confident of its success. The project diverts freshwater, nutrients, and sediment from the Mississippi River into the Breton Sound estuary in order to restore the ecological balance that was lost when the area was cut off from the river by flood control levees. "The high rate of marsh healing indicates that our efforts at Caernarvon can be graded above average," reported the state's Coastal Restoration Administrator Dr. Bill Good.
LABI, DNR'S ENERGY OFFICE SCHEDULED TO VIEW PRESIDENT'S ENERGY INITIATIVE
The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) and the state Department of Natural Resource's (DNR) Energy office will participant in an interactive video conference detailing President Clinton initiatives on the use of solar and energy efficient products throughout the country. The video conference is entitled, Buildings for the 21st Century: The President's Million Solar Roofs Initiative and will be held on Wednesday, October 29 from 1:00-2:30 pm at LABI's Board Room, 3113 Valley Creek Drive.

FLEET TO SERVE AS INTERIM CONSERVATION COMMISSIONER
BATON ROUGE Gov. M.J. "Mike" Foster, Jr. has appointed Warren A. Fleet, general counsel for the Department of Natural resources (DNR), as the interim Commissioner of Conservation.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
The first in a series of Earth and Environment Days will be held on Friday, September 26 at John L. Ory Elementary School in LaPlace. State Representative Robert "Bobby" Faucheux has planned the activity to take place in a number of elementary schools throughout his legislative district (District 57) during the fall months of this year. Representative Faucheux's staff has worked with area school principals in coordinating this extracurricular educational activity.
CELEBRATE THE COAST WITH BEACH SWEEPS
Louisiana's Coastweeks will be celebrated for the twelfth year - September 20 through October 13. The featured event to be held on Saturday, September 20th, the great Louisiana Beach Sweep, kicks-off the annual celebration supported by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), local zone coordinators, volunteers, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
COASTAL PROGRAM ACCELERATES WITH LAND AGREEMENT APPROVAL
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Assistant Secretary Katherine Vaughan's most recent accomplishment has been attaining approval from the House and Senate Natural Resources committees of the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company's (LL&E) agreement to donate land to the state for a number of planned restoration projects. She said the approval marks the way for the state's coastal program to begin a $5.5 million reclamation project that will benefit 2,500 acres of marsh.
