DNR progressing with plan for coastal impact assistance funding
Louisiana and six other oil-producing coastal states will share in a $150 million Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) with funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce as a one-time appropriation from Congress, state coastal officials announced today.
NOAA/Louisiana DNR Award Three Contracts Totaling $632,000 to Plant Marsh and Dune Vegetation on Barrier Islands
Three contracts have been awarded to two local companies to install nearly 140,000 native dune and marsh plants on three key barrier islands along Louisiana’s coast. The awards, totaling $632,000, were announced today by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries. The planted vegetation will reduce erosion on 600 acres, increasing the life span of East Timbalier Island, Grand Terre Island and the Chandeleur Islands
TWO PARISHES RECEIVE PERMITTING AUTHORITY
Plaquemines and Terrebonne parishes have recently received approval to begin operating local coastal programs. The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the federal government have granted the parishes the authority to issue permits for local concern projects in their communities as part of the Louisiana Coastal Resources Program (LCRP).
Oyster Leases Not Renewed in Impact Zones To Avoid Future Lawsuits
Jack Caldwell, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, today said state officials will not renew some of the expiring oyster leases in the Breton Sound area because of the potential liability resulting from a recent Plaquemines Parish jury verdict and the state's desire to proceed with its coastal restoration efforts.
