NOAA, SEN. BREAUX DEDICATE LOUISIANA WETLANDS CREATION PROJECT CWPPRA-funded Big Island project creates 900 acres of new wetlands
A massive two-part wetlands creation project is nearing completion in the Atchafalaya River delta, as federal and state partners gather today to dedicate the site, the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced today.
DNR NAMES NEW COMMISSIONER OF CONSERVATION
Philip N. Asprodites, a native of New Orleans, has been appointed to the post of Commissioner of Conservation at the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) effective May 26, 1998. Asprodites assumes the post held by interim Commissioner Warren Fleet.
DNR GEARS UP FOR NEW APPROACH TO MARSH GROWTH
A major innovative marsh vegetation program aimed at coastal renewal will engage state and federal agencies for the next five years. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary Jack Caldwell says DNR has signed interrelated interagency agreements with federal agencies and state universities to implement its multi-tasked Biomass Production Program at a projected cost of $641,888.
DNR'S CONSERVATION AND MINERAL INCOME PROCESSING STREAMLINED
The state's oil and gas production records kept by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may now be reported electronically by operators and companies, state officials announced today. The new process eliminates the need to file by paper and saves time and money. DNR officials say this is another step in streamlining operations and becoming Year 2000 compliant.
CONSERVATION HEARINGS IN BOSSIER CITY FOR FIRST TIME
The Department of Natural Resources' Office of Conservation will begin holding oil and gas public hearings in the Shreveport-Bossier area beginning Thursday, January 8, 1998. Commissioner of Conservation Warren Fleet said that oil and gas unitization hearings will be conducted each month in the Churchill Room, Holiday Inn Bossier City, from 9 am to 5 pm. Commissioner Fleet said having meetings in the northern part of the state fulfills legislative Act 208 as authored by Senator Max Malone. Senator Malone represents Bossier and Caddo parishes.
CAERNARVON PROJECT GIVEN AN "A" BY COASTAL SPECIALISTS
After five years in operations, coastal specialists who have routinely examined and monitored the Caernarvon freshwater diversion project are confident of its success. The project diverts freshwater, nutrients, and sediment from the Mississippi River into the Breton Sound estuary in order to restore the ecological balance that was lost when the area was cut off from the river by flood control levees. "The high rate of marsh healing indicates that our efforts at Caernarvon can be graded above average," reported the state's Coastal Restoration Administrator Dr. Bill Good.
FLEET TO SERVE AS INTERIM CONSERVATION COMMISSIONER
BATON ROUGE Gov. M.J. "Mike" Foster, Jr. has appointed Warren A. Fleet, general counsel for the Department of Natural resources (DNR), as the interim Commissioner of Conservation.
SNEAD JOINS TEAM TO MAP U.S. PIPELINES
Cartographic Manager John Snead of the state's Geological Survey has been named to a government/industry team of experts tasked with formulating a National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS). The new mapping system will be used to aid in the safe and environmentally sound transportation of natural gas and hazardous liquid by pipeline in the country.
$5.4 MILLION AWARDED FOR MYRTLE GROVE AND LITTLE VERMILION BAY RESTORATION PROJECTS IN COASTAL LOUISIANA
Two projects to protect or enhance approximately 12,000 acres of Louisiana wetlands were recently approved for funding by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act Task Force, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources jointly announced.
COASTAL EXHIBIT PORTRAYS SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TOWARD RESTORATION
The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) is proud to announce the completion of a new coastal restoration exhibit located in the department's lobby. The exhibit highlights various coastal restoration techniques, wetland functions and values, and other related Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) project information. The exhibit captures and features successful projects with outstanding photography and satellite imagery.
